10% - 15% Bandwith degradation - is that normal?

Hello,
I bridged two VPN servers together.
One is installed on a ubuntu VPS in the internet and the other side is at home - there I tested a Linux VM within oracle virtual box, an arm controller (Allwinner H3) and another (Allwinner H6 with gigabit interface).
My bandwiths:
VPS: 500mbit/s
Broadband connection at home: 59mbit down and 32.5mbit up.
When I measure speeds directly to the internet i also get the same results.
When I measure speeds through this tunnel I get 52 / 26 mbits.
Cause I tested some hardware and the CPUs were not heavily loaded my question is:
is that normal?
Are there speedup tips I can try?
Thanks

You can't be faster without going unsecure, which is no bueno. Only 15% decrease is the very best of modern VPN technology. Many are worse than that. Congratulations on having such excellent bandwidth on your VPN connection.

I have a similar setup (2 ARM devices bridging remote LANs) and see similar performance (60/40Mb/s over 400Mb/s ISP). We're not seeing 10-15% degradation, we're seeing 10-15% of the bandwidth or 85-90% degradation.

I may have spoke too soon here. I just forwarded a port to allow for a iperf3 bandwidth test that goes unencrypted. This test should yield the actual maximum bandwidth between the two hosts and it actually didn't perform much better than over the VPN, peaked at 70-80Mb/s but averaged about the same 60Mb/s. That's all to say that just because each of my ISPs may allow for 400Mb/s to some hosts (they can each do 400Mb/s to my cloud hosted VPS) they're not anywhere near 400Mb/s between one another.

And another follow-up after installing a VPN client on my cloud VPS. 300Mb/s averaged over 30 seconds over WAN, 70-75Mb/s with peaks of about 100Mb/s over SoftEther. So perhaps there is some tuning to be done?
