WAN IP Address and ISP shows after connecting to VPN

Win XP Pro SP3 Zone Alarm Netgear Router. So I install the software and enable VPN adapter to connect in Zone Alarm. IPconfig does not show 10.211 range in default gateway. However I do see client connected in sys tray Am I missing something here ? When I open web browser and go to ipchicken.com it shows my ISP and WAN IP Address while VPN client is established. Also when I disconnect VPN software the OS will not shut down or restart and I have to shut down hard which is no good for config files on OS, please help and thank you in advance.
