720 connection error when using vpnazure.net

Post by assagai » Tue May 13, 2025 7:34 pm

Hello,
I am trying to set up a VPN server. Since the setup is complicated, I decided to start with vpnazure.net as a simplest option, using http://www.vpnazure.net/en/ as a manual. I set up a Windows built-in SSTP-VPN client.
No matter what I do, I get a 720 connection error when it attempts to register me on the network. In the VPN Connection settings, I changed “automatic” to SSTP (Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol), but it did not help.
I tried two different computers (one with Windows 7, the other with Windows 11) with essentially the same result (on the machine with Windows 11 error code is not provided, but the description is essentially the same). Both use Ethernet wired adapters
To eliminate a potential source of errors, I opted for basic password authentication. All server names and passwords have been copied to ensure correctness.
I’ve seen some advice on the net on removing WinTun adaptors from a network adapters list in the device manager, and I've done that too.
Interestingly, the server machine shows a connection during the authentication. However, it does not give any other information. The log record pertaining to the attempted connection is as follows:
2025-05-13,19:20:37.615,SID-USER123-[SSTP]-1,-,CA71141119D2,FFFFFFFFFFFF,0x0800,375,DHCPv4,Request,0.0.0.0,bootpc(68),255.255.255.255,bootps(67),-,-,TransactionId=826466508 ClientIP=0.0.0.0 YourIP=0.0.0.0 ServerIP=0.0.0.0 RelayIP=0.0.0.0,-,88.99.167.254(port=65495),-

Would appreciate your input, guys.

For a test try SE client.

Hello,
Thank you for the hint.
Setting the SE client to access the SE server via SSTP was not obvious, as I did not know it was possible, and the connection setup does not explicitly mention such a possibility
The advice on viewtopic.php?t=67469 helped, albeit after many attempts. I still do not understand why it did not work on the first attempt since I followed the same steps.
Do I understand correctly that the CipherString = DEFAULT@SECLEVEL=2 setting is for Linux-based systems only and is absent on Windows machines?
