Common causes for slow internet when VPN disconnected?

What are common causes for a slow internet when VPN has been disconnected?
I have run VPN several times, and had VPNGate working, however when i end a session and return to regular internet use my internet becomes very slow. Using Firefox to load even simple well known pages like DuckDuckGo or Google or twitter logon takes a very long time.
I have not been able to find the source of the problem. I usually solve the issue by completely unistalling vpngate.
