Australian Servers

I am an Australian living in the US and am desperately seeking a reliable Australian based VPN service to allow me to watch streaming content from Australia that is blocked by the provider of that content from being viewable in certain regions.

I noticed there are no VPN Gate Servers listed in Australia. I have read elsewhere online that because of Australia's relatively slow internet speeds it is not a good place to host VPN servers. Is this correct?

Does anyone have any suggestions which may work or have been tested to work?

Thank you.

Most Australian private ADSL/2 and Cable connections have slow upload speeds compared to download. For example ADSL/2 uploads max out at about 1 Mbps.

High speed NBN packages have about 40 Mbps upload speeds but unfortunetly NBN has not rolled out to a large area yet and then you have to find someone with the high speed version who wants to offer their bandwidth as an exit for the VPN tunnel. The lower speed packages offer only about 5 Mbps upload spped or less and only moderate data alloances. Tasmania was about the first to rollout so if you know anyone down there ask them to look around for you to see if anyone is interested in setting up a server or visit the Whirlpool forums http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/ and put a request in there.

Commercial offerings would be different but then the money has to be paid to get a commercial level of bandwidth. So currently I think it would be difficult to find an Australian server. As the NBN rolls out further, give it about 6 to 9 months, I think you will find a few popping up.

Thanks gravyr. I don't know anyone in Tasmania so I'll keep checking on the NBN rollout and then look for Servers starting to appear. Hope the VPN Gate service is still active then.
