Version confusion

Post by dario » Fri Oct 06, 2023 1:16 pm

Hello,

can you please help me understand the version situation?

From softether web site, I see 4.42 as latest stable, but GitHub lists v 5.0.2 and my Debian 12 finds version 5.0.1.

Thank you!

That is a sort of a beta version?

Isn't there any point where it is clear that V5 is DE?

Isn't that odd that Debian 12 does not default to stable edition?

If DE is not a Beta, then what is it?

I already have v5 in my Debina and it seems odd: I always knew Debian uses stable versions

A Developer Edition is just what it says, it's for developers to test their builds and get it ready for beta release, a beta version is not the final release and it's for testing that version for it to become a 'released version'.

Do you think DE is safe enough? Or should I switch to SE on my server?

If you're not a developer then avoid the DE version. The sensible answer would be to use stable SE version or maybe the Beta version if you want to file bug reports.

Ok, do you know how to switch to SE on Debian with APT?

Should I remove DE first with APT?
Will the configuration be preserved and will it be valid for SE?

Thank you!!

And I find it odd that Debain 12 defaults to Dev Edition.

No need to reinstall others since you can run the binary file in the path/location your unzip/untar it
But make sure SE dev has stopped by
- vpnserver stop
- systemctl stop SE-SERVICE-NAME
