Problem with Download speed With SoftEther (Throughput)

Post by supervirus3 » Fri Feb 23, 2018 9:20 pm

I bought a VPS from DO to setup it as a VPN server for me and my friends.

I ran a speedtest on the VPS and here are the results : https://i.imgur.com/IBLbt0n.png

and followed up the guide : https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... -softether

and made an account for myself then tried to connect to the server using default settings for the windows client.

Just put the server ip in hostname, chosen port 443, then chosen the V-hub name, then at last entered my username and password.

then pressed Ok and i connected to the Server with no problems at all until I noticed this problem with my speed.

With SoftEther VPN ON

With SoftEther VPN Off (Direct)

I'd say that's a bit ridiculous there is no way the overhead or the performance decrease is by that much and it's not a VPS problem either (did a speed test on it before) , also I tried to disable the SSL encryption and that didn't help with my speed at all, also tried to increase the # Of TCP Connections and that didn't help at all as well, I even made another VM on Google Cloud (Different Server) and I got similar speeds.

I have chosen a VPS location which has less than 80ms latency to my current location so it's not a problem with latency <_<.

and after all I'd like to say that the only reason I'm using SoftEther over OpenVPN is because My country is using a weird DPI System that blocked all other VPN protocols (Story for another day).

If you would like any additional info or logs, simply reply in this thread and i will quote you with the logs.

P.S: I will be checking this thread very frequently so feel free to reply and expect a response soon.

Thanks for your time and I hope you guys can solve this issue for me.

Increasing latency makes impact for TCP throughput.

I have said that the latency to the host was less than 80ms

I also see download speed decrease with Softether. After reading all your post I realize it might be a different problem.

In my case I have Softether speaking to the internet on one interface. I have softether controlling the internal interface (an other interface) in promiscuous mode. So a client (on the local site) will talk to the internet trough softether virtual interface and softether process. No VPN function involved in this case.

Still download speed is only 1/50 of the upload speed. Earlier versions of Softether did not do this.

Not sure how to look for the problem here. I might start a separate thread for this.

I can't say anything your problem because I don't know detail of the speedtest.

If the speed test select a server geometrically, your results are natural.
